What makes Fed To Wolves Leather goods different from others?
From start to finish, every step in the design and production of my leather goods is handmade. I never use computers or machines at any stage: my patterns are hand drawn and cut; I use vegetable tanned leather that I hand cut and hand skive; each stitch is sewn by hand and each edge is hand burnished. On the occasions when I dye leather, each stroke is brushed on by hand.
Everything I sell is made in house and I never outsource any part of the production process. My in-house production ensures the highest quality and craftsmanship down to the last stitch.
Also, unlike many other leather retailers, I offer a bespoke option where my customers are given creative control in the design of a unique, and tailor-made, leather accessory.
Fed To Wolves Leather offers a bespoke service. What is that and how can I customize a leather accessory?
In addition to a selection of ready-made leather accessories, I offer a bespoke service that gives you the option to order a fully-customized piece. You can choose from one of my classic designs, bifold, long, or card wallet, or you can choose your favorite design from my catalog of ready-made patterns – just click the “customize” button on its page. Once you have chosen your design, you can select up to three colors of leather to make it a truly personalized accessory.
What is the production turnaround time for a bespoke leather item from Fed To Wolves Leather?
My current lead time, which is the time from when your bespoke order is initiated to its shipment, is currently between one and three weeks. You have the option to receive updates during the production process. Shipment times depend on the location of the delivery address. Please review our Shipping Policy for more information.
How much does it cost for a bespoke accessory and when is payment due?
Pricing for a bespoke accessory depends on the level of workmansip and detail involved in the chosen pattern, plus the cost of the raw materials. The cost of raw materials varies based on color choice and tannery pricing. If a customer aks for further customization, for example stamped initials, additional charges will apply.
Once a customer has signed off on their quote, the order is considered confirmed, and payment will be due before I begin production.
Where are Fed To Wolves Leather goods made?
Fed To Wolves Leather goods are entirely handmade, in house, in the United States of America.
I primarily work with leather from tanneries in France, Italy, and the US.
My other materials, such as thread and finish, are from the United States, France, Germany, Japan, and Singapore.
What type of leather is used at Fed To Wolves Leather? And what is the difference between top grain leather, full grain leather, corrected grain leather, and genuine leather?
While the terminology for leather grading is very nuanced, it can still be helpful in determining the quality of leather goods. Top grain leather is the top layer of the hide and can be full, or corrected, grain. Full grain leather is a top grain leather that has the hair removed, but has not been corrected. Corrected leather is a top grain leather that has been sanded, polished, or buffed.
Genuine leather can be a misleading term. It is real leather, but can come from any layer of the hide. Genuine leather is often used as a marketing term to suggest a higher quality for lower quality leather that has been highly processed, painted, or even coated with plastic (resulting in an unnatural-looking and less durable product).
At Fed To Wolves Leather, I only use vegetable tanned leather of the highest quality: hides with limited processing, no added plastic or glues, and no paint. I choose my leather hides based on the beauty of their textures and colors, for their durability, and for the natural patina that will appear with time and wear.
What is the difference between vegetable tanned leather and chromium tanned leather?
Vegetable tanning (or veg tan) is a time-consuming, complex technique that uses organic materials, like saltwater, plants, and tree bark, to remove the fur from animal hides and make the material supple. Chromium tanning (or chrome tan) is a faster, less-expensive technique where hides are treated with synthetic chromium salts, a process that has raised environmental concerns.
Veg tan has a natural look and feel, while chrome tan tends to look more synthetic. Chrome tan leather is softer, but it is thinner and less durable than veg tan leather. As a result, chrome tan leather will not stand the same test of time, and does not patina with age as veg tan will.
At Fed To Wolves Leather, I only use vegetable tanned leather for my pieces.
What are the care instructions for my Fed To Wolves leather pieces?
Over time, your wallet or purse will develop a natural patina that enhances the leather’s color and texture.
If treated with care, a leather wallet or purse can last a lifetime. A microfiber cloth can be used on a regular basis to remove light dirt and dust. For more excessive dirt, and to maintain the suppleness of the leather, you can use a leather cleaner and conditioner (I recommend Saphir). For frequency and application of a cleaner or conditioner, please follow the product manufacturer’s directions.
It’s important to avoid using cleaners that are not designed for leather, excessive water, or products that contain ammonia or bleach.
